DAWN CHORUS - ARCATA MARSH FIELD TRIP 2 |
| |
6:30 AM |
8:30 AM |
$5.00 |
6
|
|
This pre-breakfast trip is planned to catch the dawn chorus in full swing at the Arcata Marsh & Wildlife Sanctuary. Birds are on the move at this time, so there will be plenty of birding action. The willows will have songbirds singing and the reed beds will have chattering Marsh Wrens and possibly rails. The trip leader will explain all vocalizations from the straight forward Mallard quack, and California Quail "Chi-CA-go" call, to the more intricate sparrow calls and chips. This trips is for everyone and will provide an introduction to the skill of birding by ear. Return to the Community Center for some "shade grown"coffee and local pastries to prepare for your next day trip.
Terrain is mostly flat on maintained trails but it may be muddy if there has been rain. Will not stop for food. Opportunity to use a spotting scope. [Repeats with different leader on Saturday as event #31; on Sunday as event #68; on Monday as event #98, and on Tuesday as event #103]

Aboard the Shenendoah, Pacific Ocean pelagic birds -- including Black-footed Albatross, shearwaters, Cassin’s Auklet, Sabine’s Gull, and jaegers -- are expected. Marine mammals such as migrating gray whales, dolphins, and seals are likely. Rough seas will have to cancel this trip and registrants will receive a full refund; or opt for a partial refund and join the leader for a land-based back up field trip including scoping the ocean from the north jetty. You would probably want to pack some food and water for this trip, and possibly motion sickness medication or wrist-bands.

Join California State Park staff for a birding and cultural tour of Patrick's Point State Park. A State Park Interpretative Specialist will lead participants on a short tour (approximately one-half hour) of Sumeg Village, a reconstructed Yurok village. The remainder of the time will be spent birding with State Park biologists. There will be opportunities to view seabirds and species associated with the parks Sitka spruce forests and meadows. Participants will hopefully see resident red crossbills and gray jays, as well as varied thrushes, rufous hummingbirds, chestnut-backed chickadees, marbled murrelets, pelagic and double-crested cormorants, and common murres. Harbor seals and California sea lions can be expected with the occasional sighting of gray whales. Bring spotting scopes for viewing seabirds and hiking shoes for an approximately 2-mile hike over fairly flat terrain. This is a free event to the public.

This event meets at Big Lagoon at the start time. Look for a map in your registration materials. Big Lagoon County Park borders Patrick's Point State Park on the south and Humboldt Lagoons State Park between Trinidad and Orick. At mile marker 108.3 on Hwy 101 you take Big Lagoon County Park Road. From the south (Trinidad) this is a weird left turn from the fast lane of the highway. From the north (Orick) it is an easy right turn. Follow signs to the day-use and boat launch area. There is a $2 day use fee at the park unless you are staying in the campground. There are restrooms and potable water but no other services. It is a great spot to picnic, whale watch, and look for beach agates. We will explore the lagoon and view shorebirds and wildlife from the water on this pristine Lagoon using sit-on-top kayaks, both singles and tandems. Depending on environmental conditions we hope to paddle up Maple Creek from the lagoon and may see the local Roosevelt elk herd from our kayaks. This trip is appropriate for beginners and will include a brief kayaking lesson. Wetsuits, lifejackets, windbreakers, booties, kayaks, and paddles will be provided by Kayak Zak's. Participants should wear a bathing suit, a rash guard (capelene, polypropelene, or other synthetic long-sleeved shirt) to wear under the farmer-John wetsuit, and a heavy fleece or wool shirt or jacket for warmth. Do not bring any electronics unless they are waterproof! Drinking water, waterproof binoculars, and disposable waterproof cameras are recommended. Maximum paddler weight not to exceed 250 lbs. This trip is appropriate for all ages. For specific inquiries call Kayak Zak's 707 498-1130.

This field trip meets at the Woodley Island Marina Dock A - look for a map in your registration materials if you sign up for this trip. Great Egret, Snowy Egret, Great Blue Heron and Black-crowned Night-Heron fill the trees and loons, grebes, and waterfowl are on the bay. Plus, thousands of shorebirds line the waters edge. The wildlife and the Wiyot people thrived for centuries around Humboldt Bay.

The Mad River Slough offers some of the best and easiest paddling in the region. Located in the northern most tip of Humboldt Bay, this water trail has an easy put-in/takeout point and offers miles of wilderness paddling. The sounds of ocean waves echo across the dunes just west of the slough. Great blue herons and egrets stalk fish at the water’s edge. Croaking frogs and flitting dragonflies entice one to kickback and float lazily with the tide. Wonder and discovery wait around the turn of every bend in the slough. No prior experience necessary instruction and waterproof wear will be provided. Tour-length is 2-3 hours depending upon group size.

NIGHTTIME OWLS FIELD TRIP |

|
|
Based on what the Owl Scouting Trip found (event #9), several locations will be searched in the hopes of a call or lucky glimpse of an owl. Hope for the best, but expect nothing. Owls are notoriously difficult to scare up on a field trip. Clear weather is best for nighttime owling; rain cancels this trip. Dress warm and wear comfortable shoes, although terrain is mostly flat. This trip will not be able to stop for food or restrooms. This year, the trip will be carpool instead of by bus for better access to areas where owls may be encountered. There may be opportunity to use a spotting scope until dark.

The opening talk this year highlights our "sister festival" in Del Norte County. Every March from 1999 to 2008, the Aleutian Goose Festival celebrated the return of these endangered birds. Thousands of small Aleutian geese flocked to Castle Rock and the verdant fields of Del Norte County as a stopover on their spring migration route. Festival participants who joined the pre-dawn “goose fly off” witnessed firsthand the growing population of Aleutian geese each year and celebrated their recovery from near extinction. Today the Aleutian goose is a fully recovered species with a population surpassing 100,000. Sadly, the majority of geese that once visited our Crescent City shores have moved on to “greener pastures.”
In response, organizers have reinvented the Aleutian Goose Festival with a new name and date: the “California Redwoods Bird & Nature Festival" premieres May 7-9, 2010.
Like its predecessor, California Redwoods Bird & Nature Festival will continue to focus on the outstanding natural and cultural treasures of Del Norte County while offering many new programs and field trips—including bird watching, nature excursions, plant walks, and local native heritage workshops.

Join this tour for a unique perspective from twilight to dark at the Arcata Marsh & Wildlife Sanctuary. We'll look for birds at twilight and signs of mammals after dark, including a bat hunt. Dusk hours are prime mosquito time. Wear long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, and other protective clothing. Use mosquito repellents containing DEET. It should be too early for the mosquito species responsible for West Nile Virus. Terrain is flat but may be wet. Restrooms available. Will not stop for food. Light will be low for optics use.
